Cox Enterprises is the parent company of KTVU. At Cox, we pride ourselves on being a good corporate citizen and an environmental leader. Business and citizens must work together to do a better job of caring for the environment. Acting now. For tomorrow. That’s why we’ve created Cox Conserves. Created by Cox Enterprises in partnership with The Trust for Public Land, KTVU is proud to present the Cox Conserves Heroes program. Through this program, we recognize the local heroes among us who work to preserve, improve or enhance outdoor spaces in our communities. Whether creating community gardens, saving open spaces or helping to clean up neighborhoods, each community has someone who is volunteering his or her time in making better living conditions for our community.
Another of Cox Conserves goals’ is to further reduce our annual companywide footprint, or, greenhouse gas emission, by 20 percent by 2017. These efforts are expected to save 172,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, equivalent to the pollution produced by powering 26,000 homes.
Here at KTVU, we embarked on a new technology with Bloom Energy during the Summer of 2009. We have installed four “Bloom Boxes”, or, fuel cells that produce a total capacity of 400kW to power our building 24/7/365. Regardless of day or night, good weather or bad, oursystem produces a constant supply of electricity to power KTVU. The fuel cells run in parallel with our utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) and during peak demand we supplement additional energy from the utility. Overnight we dip down to 400kW or below and are operating solely on the cells. If we produce more power than used, it turns the meter backwards to account for the surplus.
Because the system operates on Bio Gas, it’s 100% renewable and offers a reduction in our carbon footprint. Cox Conserves set-up a long term contract for Bio Gas at a Central Valley Dairy – methane. This gets piped directly to PG&E and we receive the credited amount on our end in natural gas.
We’re proud to be part of this new ground breaking technology that reduces our demand and impact on the environment and we're proud to be a part of The Balance Project which brings in an inspired new model for values-based businesses.
